August journal: summer reset

Getting my home and work back in order after a month of adventure

Each month I create these Journal episodes and posts exclusively for paying members of The Kettle Community. They’re like little care packages full of seasonal observations, reflections, and resources. Enjoy, and thank you for supporting my work!

Hello friend,

July was a month chock-full of adventure, from an all-day kayak adventure to hiking Isle Royale.

I stacked experience on top of experience, and spent more time outdoors than I have in a long while. I felt a little braver, a little freer, a little…wilder.

And then I came home…and realized that while I was coming and going to and from all those adventures, my house had devolved into a bit of a disaster.

This typically happens to me sometime around the end of July or early August. The residual pile-on from never quite catching up on (laundry, dishes, decluttering, unpacking) plus the sheer variety of activities happening at any given time and their associated clutter (beach bags AND gardening tools AND camping equipment AND suitcases AND…) combine to create a seriously disordered living space.

I found myself feeling antsy and on-edge in my home, which is never a way I want to feel while I’m in my retreat from the world. So I took a deep breath, rolled up my sleeves, and gave the entire weekend over to one goal: a summer domestic reset.

Journal episodes come out at the beginning of each month, and are a benefit for paying members of The Kettle Community.
