Praying for quick healing! I am thankful that you are willing to be vulnerable and share your difficult circumstances in such a profound and helpful way. I too have been uncomfortably slowed down by similar situations and resonate with the struggle of the low step count. 🩵
I severely rolled my ankle and foot late last September, and it was astonishing how debilitating the whole experience was. Boot, brace, steel shank, X-ray upon X-ray, almost surgery, twelve weeks of PT.
I stopped wearing my watch during that time and learned to measure in milestones so basic but necessary. I have only thrown it on twice, since, once on our first day of a Disney trip (in which I walked 20,000+ steps — a MIRACLE!) and once early this summer to gauge how many steps my day-to-day activity was netting, apart from the walks I hadn’t been taking due to the heat.
I think there’s real power and beauty in the way we learn to read our bodies anew through the pain of injury, disease, and sickness.
Oh Kristine, that sounds awful! I was amazed (and horrified lol) by the extent of the swelling and bruising in my ankle, foot, toes, and even halfway up my calf. I can tell it's getting better, but am concerned about flexibility and strength in that foot/leg for sure. I have a follow-up appointment with a podiatrist in a week or so and am bracing myself to hear that recovery won't be as simple as I hoped - the ER doc didn't give me much to go on. Funny story: I don't remember much about the immediate aftermath of the fall as I was lying on the ground groaning, but I do remember one of the strangers who came to help load me into another stranger's car saying, very earnestly, that he has always wished he got PT after spraining his ankle as a younger person. And I've had multiple strangers come up to tell me similar stories since!
I love how your relationship with your watch has evolved to serve YOU! I do think it can be a useful once-in-a-while gauge, or even a tool to celebrate wins, like your Disney trip! - but there's something that's started to feel less and less good to me the more I depend on it to tell me what I'm doing day-to-day.
Thinking of you, Meagan, and hoping that each day leads to more healing.
Thank you!!

Thank you for reading, April!
Great piece! And I’m so sorry for your injury!
